Mel Torme and Robert Wells quickly wrote down the tune and the words to “A Christmas Song” commonly known as, “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire,” on a sweltering day in the middle of July in 1945. He rushed over to Nat King Cole’s house to give it to him. Nat loved it and that fall it became a hit the next year in 1946.
